$10,000 Torrington Savings Bank Scholarship Awarded to Local High School Students
TORRINGTON, CT – Torrington Savings Bank is pleased to announce that Lauren Alvarez and Jessy Haggard are their 2020 Scholarship Award recipients. Each year the bank offers two graduating seniors a 4-year, $10,000 academic scholarship ($2,500 per year).
Lauren will be attending University of Connecticut where she will major in Biology. Graduating 2nd in her class from Lewis S. Mills High School with a cumulative GPA of 4.636, she was a member of the cross country, basketball, and lacrosse teams, National Honor Society, and the National Foreign Language Honor Society (Spanish). Lauren was the recipient of the National Merit Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor, and the Yale Book Award in addition to ranking high honors each semester. Lauren worked at Winding Trails as a camp counselor and was a Youth Basketball Referee for the Burlington Lion’s Club. She volunteered for Relay for Life of Farmington Valley and was a math tutor.
Jessy will be attending the University of Connecticut where she will major in Psychology. Graduating from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village with a cumulative GPA of 3.895, she was a member of the tennis and volleyball teams, Student Government, Student Council, and Future Farmers of America. A member of the National Honor Society, she received the Emerging Rural Leaders Scholarship to the University of Chicago to attend a three-week summer program in June 2019. In March 2020, she was awarded 1st Place, Art Category of the BrainDance Awards for “Jordan Goes to Therapy”, a children’s book she wrote and illustrated. The book is aimed at elementary school children to encourage a positive association with mental health counseling.
